Allison Williams reveals husband proposed while watching ‘The Bachelor’

Allison Williams didn’t need a rose — she got the ring.

The actress and self-proclaimed “Bachelor” fan appeared on Monday’s “Bachelor Live” and finally revealed how her husband popped the question.

“I would not be married to my husband if it weren’t for this show,” Williams said.

The “Girls” actress dished on how her beau Ricky Van Veen proposed during a weekly viewing party they attend of the ABC show.

It’s fitting as that’s where the pair also first met in 2011.

“So where the viewing party is, is at my friend Lee Eisenberg’s house…and he has a couch where we always watch the show, and that’s where Ricky proposed to me, was on Lee Eisenberg’s couch,” Williams recalled.

Van Veen, a co-founder of CollegeHumor and Williams married in September, with a ceremony officiated by Tom Hanks.

Williams was a panelist on Monday’s live follow-up to the night’s pre-taped episode.

She joined Bachelor Ben Higgins, comedian Michelle Collins and Haley Ferguson, who is one-half of the famous twins vying for Higgin’s attention this season.

Collins, meanwhile, joked she has “no one” and watches the romantic reality show by herself.

Allison Williams was ‘a very different bride’ than her Girls character, Marnie: ‘Thank God’

Allison Williams was ‘a very different bride’ than her Girls character, Marnie: ‘Thank God’

When Allison Williams married CollegeHumor founder Ricky Van Veen last September, her friends and Girls costars — Lena Dunham, Zosia Mamet, and Jemima Kirke — were all in attendance. “It was really fun to have these girls there and to be actual supportive adults,” Williams tells EW. Her character, Marnie, gets married in the season opener of Girls on Feb. 21 — taking controlling bride to new hilarious heights — but Williams says her nuptials went very differently. “I was a very different bride than Marnie. Thank God. I think a lot of people showed up to my wedding expecting more Marnie than they got.”

Dunham backs this up. “You were so chill, and I have to admit I was expecting you to be more … concerned about people’s whereabouts and activities. But you were really ‘live and let live’ about the whole thing.” The wedding took place on a ranch in Wyoming where the weekend activities included fly-fishing, horseback riding, and a ropes course. (Mamet opted for the horseback ride while Dunham and Kirke tackled the ropes course.) Tom Hanks officiated and Rita Wilson, who plays Marnie’s mother on the show, gave some free marital advice. Says Mamet, “She said my favorite thing about marriage that anyone has ever said, ever: ‘Same bathroom, different toilets.’

Williams laughs and says that Wilson also gave her the very same advice. “You need to be able to talk s— while looking in the mirror at each other, but you gotta poop in different places,” she says. “Let me tell you, Rita knows everything about everything.”

Girls stars preview Marnie’s wedding day

When Girls returns to HBO on February 21 for its fifth season, we’ll see all the principals gathered for Marnie’s (Allison Williams) wedding. When EW sat down with the four women of Girls, they remember the filming of the episode as a particularly special one. “It’s always a treat for us [to film together] because it’s so nice to hang,” says Williams. In fact she, Jemima Kirke (Jessa) and Zosia Mamet (Shoshana) all bunked up at Kirke’s mother’s house upstate.

Dunham, who also directs the episode, remembers this one as an example of her friends and co-workers rising to the occasion. “Not to be cheesy or too overshare-y, but that was an episode when I truly felt the love of you guys,” says Dunham. “I was really sick and then the minute I got better, my uncle, who I was very close to, passed away. You guys gathered around me in this really amazing way.”

It’s also an amazing episode: would it surprise anyone to know that Marnie as a bride is just, well, the Marnie-est? Between micro-managing her bridemaids’ hair and makeup and worrying over the weather, she’s a bridezilla that crosses some new lines of passive aggression. “It’s so fun to be able to turn that dial way up and leave it there,” says Williams. She turns to Dunham. “Remember in the beginning I was like, ‘So what’s the arc?’ You were just like, ‘Up and down, up and down.’ ” Dunham laughs. “You were trying to map it out in an emotionally intelligent way and I was like, ‘Uh, no. You are that crazy chick now.”

Girls returns Feb. 21 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
